UK based virtual band Gorillaz has teamed up with its countrymen, the legendary fashion brand Fred Perry. The collaboration was born from the bands love for the the iconic Fred Perry poloshirt, and that is why Gorillaz has decided to showcase it.
“My first Fred Perry polo shirt was not actually mine, it belonged to Arthur Ashe. Like a cross between Barack Obama and Denzel Washington… he was an artist, he had style, afro hair, and he wore tiny shorts and, of course, the classic Fred Perry tennis shirt. He even made a record called “How to Play Tennis.” I have that record and I still don’t know how to play tennis. I love the shirt, that’s why it’s my favorite. “
– Russel Hobbs, drummer in Gorillaz
Designed by triple Wimbledon winner Fred Perry in 1950 and adopted by generations of subcultures ever since, the Original M12 Twin Tipped Fred Perry Shirt and the Original M3 solid color polo shirt are pieces that have not changed since they were designed 60 years ago. They are still made on traditional machines in Leicester, England and finished by hand.
To complete the campaign, interviews and playlists from each band member will feature on the Fred Perry website in the coming weeks.
