The iconic Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition has landed in Seoul, reimagining the futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) as an immersive voyage through nearly eight decades of the Maison’s creative legacy. This latest iteration, designed by the renowned architectural firm OMA under the direction of Shohei Shigematsu, marks the fourth collaboration between Dior and the brand, following celebrated stops in Denver, Dallas, and Tokyo. The exhibition, now open to the public, redefines the fashion exhibition by weaving together fashion, architecture, and Korean cultural heritage in a breathtaking narrative.

Housed in the expansive, column-free Art Hall 1 of the DDP, the exhibition unfolds as a visual and sensory journey, departing from traditional gallery formats. Instead, it flows organically through thematic rooms interconnected by a central hub known as ‘The Garden’. This dreamlike space draws inspiration from the madang, the traditional courtyard of Korean hanok houses, and features a striking 12-metre white ceramic moon, a modern reinterpretation of the moon jar, symbolizing harmony and simplicity. Within this garden, an immersive projection dome and a forest of hanji paper crafted by Korean artist Hyun Joo Kim create an ethereal sanctuary that bridges tradition and futurism.

Each room reinterprets Dior’s iconic codes through a distinctly Korean lens. The ‘Dior Legacy’ room, inspired by jogakbo (traditional Korean patchwork), presents a fluid structure that chronicles the evolution of the Maison’s creative directors. The ‘Lady Dior’ room showcases the iconic handbag as a sculptural installation within red lacquered showcases, evoking a bold aesthetic. Additional rooms explore 30 Avenue Montaigne, The New Look, Miss Dior, and Colorama, each highlighting key facets of Dior’s heritage. The interplay of fashion, architecture, and culture creates a dynamic dialogue, positioning the exhibition as a groundbreaking fusion of art forms.

Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams at the DDP in Seoul is a must-visit for those who view fashion as total art. This installation not only celebrates Dior’s storied history but also redefines the exhibition experience through its innovative integration of Korean cultural elements and cutting-edge design.
