Darius X. Moreno Depicts the Grit and Glamour of Hood Culture Through His Art

by Rubén Palma December 2, 2022
    written by Rubén Palma

Darius X. Moreno is an artist in every sense of the word, working in multiple mediums from painting to sculpting and even claymation. In 2012 he illustrated the Christmas card for the Obamas before graduating high school. He then majored in illustration at Parsons, The New School of Design in 2017, wherein his Junior year, he painted the cover of Goldlink’s grammy nominated album “At What Cost”.

Darius’ work is inspired by the grit and glamour of hood culture. He juxtaposes technical skill, demonstrated by energetic brush strokes, with the compelling and culturally relevant subject matter, creating a look best described as “ghetto avant-garde”. His work is a tasteful tribute to the life and times of his community.

Darius continues to paint iconic covers and other bodies of work. He now primarily focuses on his graphic novel and doll company Dare Dollz which he co-owns with his sister Dare Moreno. They will release their first issue and line of action figures in the spring of 2023.

For more information about Darius, check out his Instagram and website. Don’t forget to check out the Dare Dollz website as well.
