Nuh Milo is a 21 year old talented up-and-coming mixed media artist, based out of Edmonton, Canada – with a unique point of view. He expresses himself through painting, digital and AI art, design, fashion, and video. For the past year Milo has been immersed in the exploration of AI generated art where he trains the AI through text and image sketches. Milo then creates physical paintings of the AI generated responses.
Atremendously interesting dynamic emerges through this process where the AI and I are learning from each other. As a Muslim Canadian of Filipino descent it became apparent early on and is documented in the literature of AI art that there is cultural bias in AI depictions of visual models. My objective is to research the media bias of technology used in AI art diffusionmodels (Disco Diffusion, Midjourney, Dall-e 2 and Deforum). I seek to learn how to improve image generation to accurately represent black, indigenous and racialized people.
This work seeks to capture my own interests as an artist. I grew up a few kilometers from the pyramids of Giza. My work hovers in between aniconic practices in Islamic artand its contradiction to figural representation in late 20th century portraiture. Also taking on themes of Filipino identity politics, I seek to explore through AI assisted art, colonial influence that have affected my heritage and uniquely I use cubism as a language of reclamation. Cubism has been chosen because its original indigenous roots appropriated by a Spanish man parallels conflicting histories in the Philippines.
– Nuh Milo

For our second part of our series “10 Quick Ones”, where we, u guessed it.. ask 10 questions. We asked Nuh Milo, who was cool about the idea – which we are thrilled about. It’s basically a yes or no type interview, with two contrasting questions versus each other, which forces the protagonist to take sides and express their opinion. So without further ado, here are Nuh Milo’s, 10 questions:
Hockey or Basketball?
I don’t watch sports avidly, but it’s easier for me to follow a basketball on screen than a hockey puck.
Stay home and chill or go out?
Stay at home if you need to work. But I wouldn’t choose work over chilling outside. Being outside is essential to my mental health.
Realism or Abstract?
Realism processed through an abstract mind
80s or 90s?
Maybe 80s because it was the 90s before the 90s. But the 90s because the world was progressing.
Go to a museum or Go to the movies?
I’ve gone to more movies than museums where I’ve lived. Also a museum won’t let you enjoy art with food or drink. Movies for the memories
Be able to speak every known language or Be able to talk to animals?
I feel like animals already say as much as they choose to say. They communicate on another level. Being able to speak every known language is more useful to me.
DC or Marvel?
Marvel is too patriotic. DC for their cartoons and for the Batman and Joker dynamic
Francis Bacon or Rembrandt?
Francis Bacon is more impactful because he is closer to me in time. I’ve nonetheless channeled both artists in my work.
Pyrex Vision or Hood by Air?
Hiking trip or City holiday?
Hiking trip obviously. I’m an artist after all.
