Paris bid adieu to Haute Couture Week with a spectacular finale, courtesy of the highly anticipated return of Maison Margiela Artisanal to the runway. Emerging from a period of silence since the close of 2022, the French house, under the masterful guidance of John Galliano, staged a veritable rebirth of Haute Couture, reigniting the true essence and purpose of this artistic realm.
Galliano’s work serves as a breath of fresh air in a landscape threatened by monotony, proving that fashion can be exhilarating, provocative, and genuinely transformative. Maison Margiela, unapologetically Galliano, led us on a journey through the clandestine underbelly of Paris, drawing inspiration from Brassaï’s voyeuristic portraiture of the 1920s and 1930s. The runway show breathed the air of Belle Époque but revealed a darker, concealed aspect of the French capital’s quintessential golden age. The meticulously crafted collection, developed over a year, unfolded beneath the Pont d’Alexandre III and Café Mouche, immersing us in a Paris where nocturnal characters of questionable repute traverse its streets. Dark and disconcerting figures, yet mischievous tricksters. Lovers, dolls, gangsters, and fugitives from altercations, clad in moon-bleached coats or disheveled knitted jackets, congregated from riverbanks to clubs, engaging in a surreal, almost zombie-like dance before our eyes.
Pat McGrath’s makeup creations transformed models into porcelain dolls; a recurring leitmotif emerged through the hourglass silhouette, accentuated by nineteenth-century corsets defining exaggeratedly small waists. The bold presentation featured nudity, with models explicitly displaying female pubic hair. Bare chests, covered only by diaphanous fabrics of chiffon, organza, or latex, added to the provocative allure. John Galliano, with his trademark melodrama, capped off Haute Couture Week, rekindling the industry’s grandeur reminiscent of the early 2000s with his runway extravaganzas. The fusion of theatricality, emotion, and an unwavering commitment to his artistic codes underscores his ability to reinvent and defy expectations. Galliano retains his throne as a visionary master and provocateur of contemporary fashion, leaving us spellbound and eager for the next chapter in Maison Margiela—a show destined to carve its place in history.
