    Olivier Rousteing is Leaving Balmain

After an unprecedented 14-year reign, Olivier Rousteing has announced his departure as creative director of Balmain, marking the end of one of the most transformative eras in contemporary French fashion. Appointed in 2011 at just 24 years old, Rousteing became both the youngest creative director in Paris since Yves Saint Laurent and the first Black designer to lead all divisions of a major French fashion house — a milestone that redefined representation within the industry.

In his farewell statement, Rousteing expressed deep pride in his achievements and gratitude toward his team, describing Balmain as his “chosen family” and thanking Rachid Mohamed Rachid and Matteo Sgarbossa for their trust and guidance. His words reflect both emotional closure and creative renewal, signaling a forthcoming new chapter in his career while honoring the legacy he built.

Rousteing’s journey began at Ecole Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode in Paris and continued at Roberto Cavalli, where he led womenswear before joining Balmain’s ready-to-wear division under Christophe Decarnin in 2009. Just two years later, he rose to the helm of the house, steering it toward global relevance through a bold fusion of couture craftsmanship and pop-culture energy.

Under his leadership, Balmain became synonymous with celebrity-driven glamour, architectural silhouettes, and a digital-age renaissance that connected fashion to a new, younger audience. Collaborations with Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, and a viral H&M partnership in 2015 cemented his place as a cultural tastemaker who merged luxury with accessibility.

At 40 years old, Rousteing’s final Balmain show — staged in October during the brand’s 80th anniversary — symbolically closed a decade and a half of creative evolution. In his own words and those of CEO Matteo Sgarbossa, his vision, audacity, and inclusivity have left an indelible mark on Balmain’s history and on fashion as a whole — a legacy that continues to resonate far beyond the runway.
