Es Devlin’s 30-Year Radical Staging Practice Lands at London’s Design Museum

From stadium-sized light sculptures for Beyoncé and Kanye to intimate theatrical labyrinths, the visionary British artist turns decades of spatial alchemy into an immersive showcase.

For three decades, Es Devlin has defined the visual language of modern spectacle. Long before the era of hyper-saturated social media staging, the British artist and stage designer was engineering mind-bending environments that redefined how audiences experience music, theatre, and public art. Now, London’s Design Museum is opening its doors to an extensive mid-career retrospective tracing Devlin’s 30-year evolution from small-scale studio sketches to monumental, stadium-swallowing installations.

The exhibition unearths her vast archive, bringing together intricate scale models, hand-drawn blueprints, projection-mapping experiments, and studio prototypes that birthed legendary stages for the likes of Beyoncé, Kanye West, The Weeknd, and the Royal Opera House.

“Devlin doesn’t just build stage sets—she sculpts temporary monuments that turn collective human gatherings into transcendent visual rituals.”

Beyond the pop-culture megastars and stadium light rigs, the showcase spotlights Devlin’s shift toward ecological urgency and civic architecture—highlighting public installations like her Memory Palace and the multi-sensory maze Congregation. By laying bare her creative process, the Design Museum exposes how spatial geometry, light, and narrative can transform physical space into raw emotional gravity.
