Hans Vandekerckhove (b. 1957, Kortrijk) is a Belgian painter, living and working in Ghent. From 1975 to 1997 Vandekerckhove studied Art History at University Ghent, where he wrote his graduation thesis on David Hockney. He is a romantic and individualist whose work evolved from a neo-expressionist style (early 80ies) to a nearly abstract image inspired by alchemistic motives (90s), and from 1998 to return to the figurative and content-based themes. For example, Vandekerckhove concentrates on the picture relationship between motive and background, and human and surroundings.
For Vandekerckhove painting is a haven and a refuge, a shelter, an enchanted an enchanting space. The painted Greenhouses, landscapes and austere modernist buildings figure in an overview published in ‘Gimme Shelter’, with tekst by Eric Rinckhout and introduction by Oscar van den Boogaard.
