Jackson Pollock’s “Number 31” is Expected to Sell for $45M at Christie’s

Last week Christie’s announced that they would be auctioning off Sean Connery’s old Picasso “Buste d’homme dans un cadre“. Now another one of the greats are about to hit the auction block of the iconic auction house, in the form of Jackson Pollock’s painting from 1949, ” Number 31″. The painting is 31 x 22 inches, and is expected to sell for around $45 million.

Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was widely noticed for his “drip technique” of pouring or splashing liquid household paint onto a horizontal surface, enabling him to view and paint his canvases from all angles. It was also called all-over painting and action painting, since he covered the entire canvas and used the force of his whole body to paint, often in a frenetic dancing style.

The Jackson Pollock “Number 31” auction, will take place at Christies New York, on May 12 – where it will lead the 20th Century Evening Sale.

For more information about the auction, go to Christie’s website.
