While international collectors, gallerists, and curators descend upon Paris for the high-stakes prelude to Art Basel, the city’s streets have erupted into a theater of acute political friction. On Monday morning, the iconic glass pyramid of the Louvre became the focal point of a sweeping wave of civil unrest, as student demonstrators—spearheaded by scholars from the adjacent École du Louvre—erected blockades across the museum’s entrances to protest mounting austerity and public funding cuts.
With metal security gates cordoning off the plaza and signs reading “365 days of austerity” plastered across the institution’s facade, the world’s largest museum was forced to shut its doors, compounding a tense climate of preemptive gallery closures and heightened security across the city.
The dramatic blockade coincides with an already volatile week for Paris’s cultural infrastructure.
