Mathew Tom Takes Inspiration From His Chinese-American Heritage When Creating His Dope Paintings

by Rubén Palma November 18, 2022
    written by Rubén Palma

Mathew Tom is a New York-based multi-disciplinary artist. Tom draws inspiration from his Chinese-American heritage, combining Eastern and Western imagery to create new interpretations, meanings, and experiences. His practice is underscored by a fascination with what he calls ‘universal images’. “I often wonder if paintings have some form of power. Certain images seem to have a particular charm and are able to attract an audience regardless of the time period or location.” Tom’s monochrome oil paintings harbor a myriad of symbols resulting in an atmosphere where motifs and visual stimuli transcend their historical and geographical origin, to be recognized and experienced in an entirely new context. These dream-like compositions become an outlet to express and mediate Tom’s own individual identity.

Mathew Tom received his MFA at Goldsmiths, University of London, and also studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.  He was a fellow at the Royal Academy in London where he was awarded the Starr Fellowship. He has shown internationally in the United States, England, Wales, Spain, The Netherlands, Denmark, South Korea, Taiwan, and India.  He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
