If anyone expected Tilda Swinton to release a conventional Hollywood memoir detailing red carpet glitz and career timelines, they haven’t been paying attention. The Scottish performer, artist, and eternal chameleon has spent her career subverting expectations—from sleeping inside a glass box at the Serpentine to morphing across the screen for Derek Jarman, Luca Guadagnino, and Marvel. Now, she is turning her attention to the page with her debut memoir, Material Evidence.
Slated for global publication in autumn 2028 via Canongate and Farrar, Straus and Giroux, the book explicitly refuses a chronological narrative. Instead, Swinton constructs an associative, multi-sensory landscape where memory is unlocked strictly through physical objects.
“I see it as a book about curiosity,” Swinton offers on the project, describing the text as “a trail of breadcrumbs through the forest.”
Rather than marching from childhood to celebrity, Material Evidence anchors its chapters to a eccentric inventory of personal relics: a christening dress, a letter, a wooden leg, an old sweatshirt, a strand of embroidery silk, and a single photograph.
