Ib Kamara Leaves Off-White at a Moment When the Brand Feels Unfinished Again

by OS Staff August 31, 2026
    written by OS Staff

Off-White has always lived in the grey area. Between streetwear and luxury, quotation marks and sincerity, product and idea, youth culture and institutional power. But since the passing of Virgil Abloh in 2021, that grey area has become something more fragile: a space where legacy, reinvention, ownership, and direction keep colliding.

Now, Ib Kamara is leaving the creative direction of Off-White, closing a chapter that began in the aftermath of Abloh’s death. A longtime collaborator of the founder, Kamara was first appointed Art and Image Director in 2022, before later taking fuller creative control of the brand and presenting his first collection as official creative director in New York in 2024.

His exit arrives at a complicated time. After LVMH sold Off-White to Bluestar Alliance in 2024, the brand entered a visibly unsettled phase. According to 25 Gramos, its New York flagship has closed, its retail network in China has disappeared, and Bluestar has begun placing the brand in points of sale that would once have felt difficult to imagine for a label built on cultural heat and scarcity.

Kamara’s time at Off-White was always shaped by an impossible task: how to continue a brand so deeply tied to the mind, language, and presence of its founder. Virgil Abloh did not simply create clothes. He created a grammar: arrows, zip ties, quotation marks, industrial straps, collaborations, irony, access, remixing, and the belief that fashion could operate like an open-source cultural system.

Kamara tried to move inside that grammar without becoming trapped by it. His work brought in a more personal, image-led sensibility, informed by styling, editorial world-building, music, Black identity, African references, and youth culture. His Off-White was not always easy to read, but it was often searching — trying to hold Abloh’s DNA while allowing another emotional temperature to enter the room.

That search now gives way to something even more uncertain. Earlier this year, after Kamara’s final show, Off-White announced a distributed creative model built around ten external collaborators, who will design capsule collections until next April. For now, there is reportedly no direct successor to Kamara and no runway show planned in the coming months.

The move says a lot about fashion’s current condition. Creative direction is no longer always centred on one auteur figure. Brands are experimenting with networks, capsules, guest voices, drops, and decentralised authorship. But for a house like Off-White, whose original power came from one person’s ability to connect everything at once, the absence of a central vision feels especially charged.
