Raw Skin and Salt Tears: Marina Abramović Bleeds Into an Abandoned Finnish Silo

Mounted inside the looming, weather-worn cavern of Alvar Aalto’s historic industrial silo in Oulu, Finland, Marina Abramović unveils “Skin, Salt and Tears”—an unsparing, visceral meditation on human mortality and planetary collapse for the Oulu2026 European Capital of Culture. Conceived alongside Adam Lowe and Madrid’s legendary Factum Arte, the performance icon transforms her own aging physical form into a vulnerable, porous barometer for ecological trauma. Across ten haunting, large-scale framed prints, the outer boundary of human skin is reimagined through hyper-detailed, innovative printing methods, evoking the bloody Greco-Roman myth of Marsyas to expose how terrifyingly fragile our bodily defenses are against the brutal Arctic elements.

The raw physical dialogue deepens through a fractured cast-salt bust of Abramović’s own head, intentionally cracked during its cooling process to mirror the shifting, brackish degradation of the Baltic Sea, its fleshy pink hue painfully linking the Earth’s decaying mineral wealth to our own bloodstream. Nearby, suspended glass tears draw a striking, apocalyptic contrast between a drowning Venice and Oulu’s rising post-glacial landmass, balancing grief with a desperate glimmer of environmental resistance. Anchored by a continuous screening of her operatic epic Seven Deaths of Maria Callas, Abramović uses the crumbling concrete of AaltoSiilo not merely as a museum, but as a bleeding, industrial altar—proving that the decay of our natural landscapes and the dissolution of our physical bodies are ultimately one and the same.
