Streetwear has long asserted itself as modern culture’s dominant visual language, but Tremaine Emory has always pushed the medium further—using denim as a canvas for historical reckoning, cultural memory, and radical storytelling. Now, the Denim Tears founder is taking his vision out of the showroom and onto the pristine walls of the institution.
Opening at the SCAD Museum of Art, the groundbreaking exhibition “Tremaine Emory: Denim Tears from the Pool of Black Genius” marks a definitive moment for the multidisciplinary creative. Running through January 11, 2027, the retrospective places Emory’s garments and iconic collaborations directly in conversation with fine art giants.

By pairing Denim Tears archival pieces with masterworks by Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Alma Thomas, and Faith Ringgold, the exhibition builds a lineage between 20th-century art history and modern street culture. Contemporary visionaries like Arthur Jafa, Hank Willis Thomas, and David Hammons also anchor the show, illuminating the vast web of Black artistic expression that fuels Emory’s design ethos.
