Brooklyn based art collective MSCHF, known for their playful and sometimes controversial projects, has created a new sculpture inspired by a famous work of ancient Greek art.The sculpture reimagines the iconic Laocoön and His Sons, depicting the struggle between a Trojan priest and giant serpents. In MSCHF’s version, Mickey Mouse replaces Laocoön, while the serpents remain.

Mickey’s long limbs are wrapped around the writhing creatures, creating a new and unexpected visual narrative. This act of replacing a revered historical figure with a popular cartoon character is likely a commentary on copyright and cultural ownership. The creation of the sculpture was only possible because the 1928 iteration of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain earlier in 2024. MSCHF anticipated this event and cleverly began taking pre-orders for the sculpture back in 2021. Pre-orders offered a “Famous Mouse” sculpture owned by a “Famous Animation Co.,” hinting at the true identity of the figure. Those who pre-ordered received a token that can be redeemed for the completed sculpture.
