The text examines how 1990s nostalgia has evolved beyond surface-level references to become a functional and technical design language, particularly within contemporary fashion and footwear. Operating within this space, Aimé Leon Dore and New Balance reunite for a new collaboration that builds on shared ideas of heritage, performance, and storytelling.
At the center of the project is a reimagining of the New Balance Made in UK 991, a cornerstone silhouette from the brand’s archive. Rather than treating the sneaker as a standalone object, this release approaches it as part of a broader narrative-driven capsule, drawing inspiration from high-performance nautical culture and ’90s marine aesthetics.
The footwear arrives in two distinct colorways. The 991 “Celery” features a grey mesh base layered with red leather overlays and olive and brown suede panels, creating a controlled interplay of contrast, texture, and depth. The second version, “Chocolate,” was previously teased in Aimé Leon Dore’s FW25 lookbook, reinforcing the collaboration’s continuity and seasonal cohesion.
Extending beyond footwear, the capsule includes apparel designed with the same utilitarian mindset. Technical nylon jackets and trousers form the backbone of the clothing offering, supported by half-zip fleece jackets that echo the performance-driven, maritime references of the collection.
