Under Rei Kawakubo’s creative direction, the iconic Japanese Ikebana iconoclast turns flowers into raw, visceral matter where beauty and decay collide.
To standard floral design, flowers are delicate, transient decorations to be neatly arranged. To the late Japanese master Yukio Nakagawa, they were living, breathing matter loaded with physical force, shock value, and existential dread. Staged under the creative direction of Rei Kawakubo, Dover Street Market Paris has unveiled Yukio Nakagawa by Comme des Garçons—a striking visual installation occupying the pillars and central courtyard of the Parisian space.
Opened on September 25, the takeover transforms the retail sanctuary into a landscape of “beautiful chaos.” Rather than displaying pristine blooms, the installation embraces Nakagawa’s revolutionary rejection of traditional Ikebana schools, treating botanical forms as raw material subject to shifting time, deterioration, and organic collapse.

Forging his path entirely outside the rigid Japanese floral establishment, Nakagawa became legendary for his violent, avant-garde subversion of the craft—frequently pairing flower petals with poured glass, raw animal blood, or dropping thousands of tulip heads from helicopters. At DSMP, his imagery wraps around structural pillars and spills into the courtyard, blurring the boundary between living sculpture and mortal decay.
