Rei Kawakubo Resurrects SIX, Comme des Garçons’ Legendary Cult magazine, at Dover Street Market

Thirteen years after its final print run, the radical image-led publication returns to London for Frieze Week, merging archival surrealism with contemporary visionaries like Jack Davison and Flor Garduño.

When Rei Kawakubo launched SIX (Sixth Sense) in 1988, she didn’t just publish a fashion magazine—she blew up the entire structural blueprint of print media. Rejecting commercial trends, predictable clothing roundups, and standard editorial copy, the predominantly image-led publication placed photography, fine art, architecture, and visceral surrealism on a pedestal, enlisting cultural heavyweights like Robert Frank, Peter Lindbergh, and Gilbert & George.

Now, after more than three decades in the archives, SIX is making a triumphant return. Timed to coincide with Frieze London 2026, Dover Street Market London has unveiled a sprawling, immersive window and interior installation curated by Kawakubo herself.

Stretching across DSM flagships in Tokyo, Paris, and London, the revival pairs iconic archival spreads with striking new visual contributions from contemporary image-makers like Jack Davison and Flor Garduño. To celebrate the homecoming, the project is accompanied by a limited-edition capsule of 12 T-shirts featuring original SIX artworks, alongside a special-edition print mailer that honors the publication’s tactile origins.
