teamLab has always treated nature as something that can answer back. A flower is not simply a flower. A forest is not simply a backdrop. Light, weather, bodies, darkness, wind, water, and digital systems all become part of the same unstable conversation.
At teamLab Botanical Garden Osaka, that conversation now takes the form of Life is the Small Sun Flickering in the Dark, a seasonal artwork transforming a field of around 20,000 white sunflowers into a glowing nocturnal landscape. Installed inside Nagai Botanical Garden, the work is on view from August 1 to August 16, 2026, appearing only after dark, when the living garden becomes a luminous open-air museum.
The idea is simple, but quietly overwhelming: white sunflowers emerging from the night, each one catching and reflecting light until the field begins to resemble a scattered constellation at ground level. The title gives the work its emotional shape. Life is not treated as something monumental or fixed, but as something small, temporary, flickering, and radically dependent on darkness.
That fragility is central to teamLab’s wider language. The collective often builds environments where boundaries dissolve: between artwork and visitor, natural and artificial, individual and system. In Osaka, the botanical garden remains alive beneath the technology. The flowers are not replaced by digital spectacle. They are intensified by it.
The setting matters. Nagai Botanical Garden covers approximately 240,000 square metres and contains around 1,200 species of plants, changing with the seasons. By day, it is a botanical garden. By night, teamLab turns it into a responsive art space shaped by wind, rain, birds, visitors, and the passage of time.
That relationship to seasonality gives the sunflower work a different charge from a permanent installation. It cannot simply be switched on forever. It belongs to a specific window, a specific bloom, a specific summer darkness. Its beauty depends on timing, which also means its disappearance is built into the experience from the start.
