Europe’s Largest Digital Art Museum to Open in Hamburg with teamLab Borderless Takeover

Hamburg is set to become the new epicenter of digital and immersive art in Europe with the arrival of the UBS Digital Art Museum in 2026. Spanning a massive 6,500 square meters, the waterfront institution will debut with an ambitious, full-scale installation by renowned Japanese art collective teamLab, marking the group’s first permanent museum project in Europe.

Titled teamLab Borderless Hamburg, the immersive opening exhibition promises a sensorial journey through interactive landscapes, algorithmic visuals, and cascading light installations—offering a radical break from traditional museum models. Visitors will be encouraged to engage, touch, and explore, embracing a multisensory approach to art that dissolves the boundaries between viewer and work.

The museum’s origin story traces back to tech entrepreneur Lars Hinrichs, who was inspired after visiting teamLab’s Tokyo location in 2019. Determined to bring that transformative experience to a European audience, he partnered with Artistic Director Ulrich Schrauth, securing a prime site in Hamburg’s HafenCity district—an emerging hub for innovation and culture. While UBS steps in as a naming sponsor and strategic ally, the institution will operate privately with a strong focus on public engagement and artistic experimentation.

But it’s not just about pushing the envelope in digital art—the UBS Digital Art Museum also aims to lead in climate-conscious practices. Positioned to become Europe’s largest carbon-neutral museum, the project includes efforts like transparent ticketing, carbon offsetting, and sustainable operations to align environmental responsibility with cultural progress.

As 2026 approaches, Hamburg readies itself for a landmark moment in contemporary art, with the museum poised to redefine how we experience digital creativity in public space.
