Few designers have made fashion feel as theatrical, romantic, excessive, and unstable as John Galliano. His clothes do not simply dress the body. They stage it. They turn silhouettes into characters, runways into fever dreams, and history into something half-remembered, half-invented, and dangerously alive.
Now, that world is heading to The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Costume Institute has announced John Galliano: Horizons, its spring 2027 exhibition, dedicated to the work of the British designer whose career has spanned his own label, Givenchy, Dior, and Maison Margiela. The show is expected to examine Galliano’s influence across more than four decades of fashion, placing his work inside the grand machinery of the Met’s most visible cultural stage.
The exhibition will arrive with all the weight that comes with a Costume Institute show. These are not ordinary fashion exhibitions. They are museum blockbusters, media events, industry rituals, and red-carpet economies all at once. Every spring, the Met turns fashion into spectacle, and the Met Gala becomes the public-facing portal into the exhibition’s world.
With Galliano, however, spectacle cannot be separated from conflict. His legacy remains marked by the antisemitic and racist remarks he made in 2010 and 2011, which led to his dismissal from Dior and fundamentally altered how his work, image, and public return have been received. The Met has said the exhibition will address the derogatory conduct that changed his career and public reception, rather than presenting the work in isolation from that history.
That is what makes the project so charged. Galliano’s influence on fashion is undeniable: the bias-cut romance, the historical collage, the broken aristocrats, the cinematic runway worlds, the transformation of couture into performance. But a museum retrospective does not only preserve influence. It also frames memory. It tells the public how to look.
The title Horizons suggests movement, expansion, and distance, but the exhibition will have to deal with proximity too: proximity to harm, admiration, forgiveness, commerce, and the uneasy machinery of comeback culture. Fashion has always had a complicated relationship with genius, often using brilliance as a way to soften damage. The Met’s challenge will be to avoid turning complexity into decoration.
